ANNAPOLIS STAIRSSome metal fabricators only do smaller jobs such as just the stair railings. Annapolis Railings & Stairs can take care of all your needs. We have built many types of stairs over the years around Annapolis and can create all the components, the stairs, the steps, and the railings in a variety of designs.
You need more structural strength for stairs than for railings. Therefore steel is used. However, the steps can be metal or wood, and the railings of the stairs can have a wide selection of materials used singly or in combination. For these decorative and functional components, check out the Railings page. Even if you only use steel, you may be surprised at the wide range of design choices you have. Steel can be fastened with bolts or by welding. We typically weld everything since it makes the stairs stronger and more durable and there is no chance of the fastenings coming loose. Steps or TreadsAs you can see from the pictures, you can have Annapolis steps made of wood or steel. Also pictured are pan stairs which are typically used in commercial settings. Each tread has a pan shape into which cement is poured. However, they can be made more decorative and used in both residential and commercial locations by adding stone or tile in the treads.
Risers – Closed Riser or Open RiserThe tread is the step that you walk on. The riser is the vertical part between treads. An open riser is what it sounds like, there is nothing there and you can see through it. You might say that open riser means no riser. The closed riser has a vertical piece of wood or metal that goes from one tread to the next. Think of the wood stairs in most homes.
Angled, Spiral or StraightThe simplest to build are straight stairs. Sometimes though, to get a different look or because of space constraints you might choose a different layout. You may want the stairs to be in a shorter wider layout instead of long and thin. For this, you would have the stairs go part way to a landing. Then they could turn 90 degrees and continue or they could turn 180 degrees and double back. Spiral stairs use a minimum of space and have an appealing look.
Banisters / Balustrades / Stair RailingsThere is more detail on the page by this name, but you have a broad range of choices for the materials you use. These include:
There are also a number of coatings including painting in whatever color you like, powder coating, clear coatings or no coating so the metal will patina. You can also select from different finishes ranging from a rough finish that gives it a rustic look to polished at the other end of the spectrum or a brushed finish. Spindles (or Balusters)You could have a hard time deciding because there are so many designs to choose from. Basket elements, scroll and ribbon designs, simple and straight, twisted, square, round, forged, cast and many more options. On top of those choices which are basically variations on vertical rods, you might choose wire mesh, wire cables, glass or wood.
We look forward to working with you to design and build you a set of stairs or just build to your specifications. We enjoy working with both builders of commercial and residential properties, rehabbers, and home owners. A nice looking set of stairs can increase the desirability and value of a property.
